Addressing Death in American Health Care

There’s a satellite Veritas event for graduate students! The same day (4/24) at 12:15pm in Kerckhoff Grand Salon. Dr. Raymond Barfield and Dr. Karl Lorenz will host an interactive forum around issues of suffering, the American denial of death, and health care reform. Lunch is provided. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and professional students may RSVP for preferred seating.

The Veritas Forum – Tues, April 24, 8pm

Two medical doctors — one a Christian, one an agnostic leaning on the atheist side — discuss meaning in life in the midst of suffering and death. Dr. Raymond Barfield (Duke) and Dr. Michael Lill (Cedars-Sinai & UCLA) discuss in a candid conversation moderated by Professor Bill Klug (UCLA).

Held in Ackerman Grand Ballroom. Doors open at 7:30pm. Wristbands are needed for entry, but you can get them on the 1st floor Ackerman patio before doors open. It’s free! Looking forward to listening to their dialogue!

Back in Kerckhoff 133

After Finals Week, Spring Break, and Passion Week, we’re back in Kerckhoff 133 for bible studies at 8pm! We’ll continue to meet at the tables near Panda Express for dinner before bible studies. See you at the tables at 7pm!

I really enjoyed the song presentation today at the Easter Service. Here’s a youtube video of someone who can sing I Will Rise (even) better than we can.

Off-campus Good Friday

We will be meeting off-campus on Friday, 4/6. In lieu of our regular bible study in Acts, we will be joining with other LCF groups and Life Baptist Church to remember the significance of the cross at a Good Friday Service held at 1609 S. Barrington Ave., Los Angeles, at 9pm. Our regular bible study series will resume on Friday, April 13, at 8pm in Kerckhoff 133.

Learning Hebrew and Greek to enjoy the depths of God’s Word

The majority of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, and the New Testament was written in Greek.* What better way to understand God’s Word than to read it in its original language? Well, okay, we might not be able to learn Greek and Hebrew with that great fluency, but at least we can pick up a few words here and there to be able to enjoy the richness that we lose when the Bible gets translated to English. Pastor Daniel gave a little appetizer at our Grad/ISM Retreat — create, dust, and ‘in Christ’ are just a few words/phrases that get over-simplified in English.

Pastor Peter Lee, pastor of Worthy Life Baptist Church and a graduate student studying Hebrew Bible/Northwest Semitic Philology at Johns Hopkins University, will be giving us a language primer on Thursday, 1/19, and Friday, 1/20, 7:30pm – 10pm on each night. Contact Tim for more details.

New room – Ackerman 2408!

For the Winter 2012 Quarter, we’ll be meeting in Ackerman 2408 at 8pm for bible study. We’ll still be meeting at the tables near Panda Express for dinner beforehand. See you Friday the 13th at 7pm!

What is the Gospel? by Mark Dever

We started book clubs this quarter! One group is reading “What is the Gospel?” by Mark Dever. If you’re looking for something to read during Winter Break, it might be worth it to pick up a copy!

I am thankful for…

Jesus who allows me to be with Him. The Sovereign LORD says, “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 11:19). He is the moving agent that changes us. And, “he who began a good work in [us] will carry it onto completion” (Philippians 1:6). I’m thankful that Ephesians 5:18 is written in the passive voice. God Himself is the one who fills us with His Holy Spirit; it is not by our effort or ability. While I am still a sinner, Jesus Christ died for me, so I know what love is (Romans 5:8).

What are you thankful for?

This Thanksgiving, we can recall God’s faithfulness in our lives by praying through Deuteronomy 8 and making it our own testimony.

Health Fair Outreach

In the coming months, we’ll be serving with World Impact to provide free basic health screening to underserved populations within LA who do not have access to medical care, and with Children’s Hunger Fund to help send toys to impoverished families. Like we’ve been learning through the bible studies in Acts, through these concrete avenues we want not only to assist in meeting people’s immediate physical needs but help meet the ultimate need, as God sees it, for Jesus.

Please pray as some of us will be volunteering at a health fair this Saturday, 11/2. The fair is sponsored by Jefferson Community Church, a church planted by World Impact for the community near USC.
