What is the Gospel? by Mark Dever

We started book clubs this quarter! One group is reading “What is the Gospel?” by Mark Dever. If you’re looking for something to read during Winter Break, it might be worth it to pick up a copy!

Radical: Taking back your faith from the American dream

A couple of Fridays ago, Pastor Daniel Im gave a bible study on the reformation instated by Josiah. The reform, described in 2 Kings 22-23, comprehensively wiped out idol worship that had infiltrated their worship practices and reintroduced worship as God has originally intended. Interested in what God desired, Josiah (seems to have accidentally) found the book of the law and responded by humbling himself and letting his heart be moved. This personal repentance amplified into a reform that spread across the nation of Judah.

Today, we are also in need of reform. We suffer from a similar syncretism, where worship of God as God intends is diluted by other factors. During the bible study, we listened to the first chapter of David Platt’s “Radical: Taking back your faith from the American dream.” He challenged us: Have we redefined Christianity to make Jesus look middle-class, someone who wants us to be balanced, loves us just as we are, brings comfort and prosperity and is okay with materialism? Have we molded Jesus to look like ourselves? Are we really following Jesus? The first call of discipleship, as described by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is to abandon attachments of this world. However, the cost of non-discipleship is to miss out on gaining the pearl of greatest worth (Matthew 13:46).

In response to the bible study, we’re going to be reading David Platt’s book together. Read with us! Check out the Radical Experiment on Facebook too.

Fall Retreat! Oct 8 – Oct 10

Our LCF Grad group will be attending Life Baptist Church’s Fall Retreat at The Oaks Retreat Center from evening of Friday, Oct. 8 to Sunday, Oct. 10. We are so fortunate to  have Pastor Don Overstreet as our retreat speaker again this year. He has spoken at our church retreat for the last 2 years in a row and God has truly spoken powerfully through him each time! Through his preaching of God’s Word at last year’s retreat, I realized what an amazing joy and privilege it is to call Jesus my personal Lord and Savior. If you have any additional questions or would like to sign up to go, please let me know (timdong@ucla.edu)!  It will surely be a weekend well spent!

Here is a short bio on Pastor Don (of course, it is better if you meet him in person!)

Pastor Don Overstreet has been involved in church planting for forty years in the United States and abroad. He is a church planter strategist with the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Southern California and an adjunct professor at Golden Gate Baptist Seminary.   He was the first Baptist missionary with the International Mission Board to the island of St. Vincent on 1977.  He started a church out of a prison ministry and led many people to the Lord.  Today there are eight churches on the island all pastored by nationals. Many of the pastors were led to the Lord by Don when they were teenagers. The churches make up the St. Vincent Baptist Convention.
