As a follow-up to Dr. Francis Collins’ talk in February, our very own Tim Dong (Chemistry Ph.D. student at UCLA) hosted a talk on UCLA campus, debunking through facts and science the social (mis)perception that evolution and Christianity are incompatible.

    Thanks, and well done, Tim!

Some photos from ISM spring break trip.  First day we toured the Monterey Bay area, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Carmel Beach, then on to scenic San Francisco.  The weather was drizzly the whole time we were there, but it wasn’t enough to dampen our spirits.  On the itinerary: the ferry ride into SF, Pier 39, trolley ride, Lombard St., Battery Spencer, Point Bonita Lighthouse (Marin Headlands), Golden Gate Bridge & Treasure Island (and a quick night drive around Simon’s alma mater).

Stephen Hawking comes to USC! Dr. Hawking, one of the most brilliant scientific minds of all time, gave his talk on the implications of the Heisenburg uncertainty principle on the observable and the unobservable (not in our world anyway) events surrounding a black hole.
Interestingly, the final question from the audience during the Q&A was: “Does God exist?” He was careful to phrase his answer: “I believe, in science, there’s no room for God.” — while he did not have a chance to elaborate on his answer, perhaps what he was referring to was this

Life Christian Fellowship at Caltech is co-sponsoring a talk by Dr. Francis Collins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Collins_(geneticist)), the former head of The Human Genome Project on its campus. The talk is this Thursday (Feb. 5) at 8:00pm on CalTech campus in Pasadena. He is a former atheist (according to Wiki) who, as an adult, became Christian.

His talk is titled “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief.” (also the title of his book)  Just a side note, in Ravi Zacharias’ book, he mentions about attending an eye-opening talk that Collins gave about his work with DNA and his faith.

In a packed auditorium, Dr. Collins talked about how evolution (from a genetics perspective) and one’s faith in Christianity do not stand at odds, but actually that the intricacies of life point to a designer.  He had a chance to share briefly and personally about how, as an adult and a medical professional, he became a Christian.
